Most states issue tax-exempt permits or numbers to farm businesses that sell products, allowing farmers to make tax-exempt purchases for farm equipment and supplies. Check your state’s website for the department of revenue or department of agriculture for regulations.
Back to: Build Your Business
Learn which tax identification number you’ll need to obtain from the IRS and your state revenue agency, such as Employer Identification Number (EIN). If your business is an LLC with no employees, you don’t need to apply for an EIN, but it may still be a good idea to separate your business from your personal Social Security number. Apply for Licenses, Permits, and Tax Exemption
Make a list of federal, state, and local licenses and permits required for your business. In addition to leases and permits for your farm site, your business may also require Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification, a shellfish shipper license, and other licenses and certifications.
Open a Business Bank Account
Keep business and personal bank accounts separate. You can open a business account as long as you have an EIN, or a Social Security number if you’re a sole proprietor. It may also be helpful to open a separate business credit card for all of your business expenses.
