Shallow Water Farming: A Low-Cost Innovation
Long Island, NY farmers are successfully growing kelp in shallow waters, adapting traditional deep-water practices to their environment. When asked about the advantages, farmers highlight the low setup cost—just $50 for a hundred-foot line using two screw anchors and rope, compared to expensive deep-water systems. This method eliminates buoys, reducing both costs and visual impact. The simple setup takes just 15-20 minutes to install and allows farmers to work in waders rather than boats during adverse weather. Most importantly, kelp thrives in these shallow environments while helping improve water quality by removing nitrogen from areas with high runoff, creating both economic and environmental benefits.

1 00:00:19.125 --> 00:00:23.705 One problem that I faced was where my oyster farm was, 2 00:00:23.705 --> 00:00:25.705 and a lot of other oyster farms are on Long 3 00:00:25.705 --> 00:00:26.865 Island or in shallow water. 4 00:00:27.885 --> 00:00:29.625 And the standard practice is 5 00:00:29.625 --> 00:00:32.425 to grow kelp along suspended lines in deeper water. 6 00:00:32.805 --> 00:00:34.665 Uh, but the logic being 7 00:00:34.665 --> 00:00:36.185 that the kelp does not touch the bottom. 8 00:00:37.685 --> 00:00:39.305 So that really wouldn't work in these 9 00:00:39.305 --> 00:00:40.545 shallow water environments. 10 00:00:41.365 --> 00:00:45.105 And as a scientist here at Stony Brook University, 11 00:00:45.625 --> 00:00:48.345 a few years ago with my, uh, colleague Chris Goler, 12 00:00:48.345 --> 00:00:51.145 we had written a proposal to look at just that, 13 00:00:51.285 --> 00:00:54.065 can we grow kelp in shallow water environments? 14 00:00:54.805 --> 00:00:56.785 And the shorter answer is yes. 15 00:01:02.045 --> 00:01:05.785 So in addition to achieving very good growth, there's, uh, 16 00:01:05.785 --> 00:01:07.985 several benefits to this shallow water system. 17 00:01:08.745 --> 00:01:10.345 Probably one of the biggest benefits is it's very 18 00:01:10.345 --> 00:01:11.465 inexpensive to set up. 19 00:01:12.205 --> 00:01:14.705 We can set up a hundred foot line, um, 20 00:01:14.755 --> 00:01:16.545 using just two screw down anchors 21 00:01:16.965 --> 00:01:19.905 and, uh, you know, a hundred feet of rope between them. 22 00:01:20.765 --> 00:01:22.905 The total cost for the setup is about $50. 23 00:01:23.615 --> 00:01:26.665 It's really a fraction of what it costs to set up a, uh, 24 00:01:26.665 --> 00:01:28.825 deeper water setup with a suspended line system 25 00:01:29.235 --> 00:01:30.865 where you have to buy bigger anchors. 26 00:01:31.165 --> 00:01:35.105 Um, sometimes chain to go from the anchors and buoys. 27 00:01:35.765 --> 00:01:37.585 Um, another great advantage 28 00:01:37.605 --> 00:01:39.025 of the Shallow West system is you don't have 29 00:01:39.025 --> 00:01:40.385 to use any buoys, okay? 30 00:01:40.405 --> 00:01:44.905 The lines are just pulled tight so they're tart, um, 31 00:01:45.635 --> 00:01:47.465 don't need buoys to help suspend the line. 32 00:01:48.085 --> 00:01:51.105 And, um, so not, not only does that reduce costs, 33 00:01:51.105 --> 00:01:53.145 but it also reduces, um, 34 00:01:53.775 --> 00:01:55.665 what some people might consider eye pollution. 35 00:01:55.665 --> 00:01:57.585 Some people might not wanna see buoys at the surface. 36 00:01:57.725 --> 00:02:00.505 So it really gives a very, you know, very low impact. 37 00:02:00.885 --> 00:02:04.905 We set up a very, very simple system, uh, on the farm. 38 00:02:05.175 --> 00:02:07.625 Just put two screw anchors in the farm, uh, with the heads 39 00:02:07.625 --> 00:02:10.105 of the screw anchors sticking about a foot 40 00:02:10.105 --> 00:02:11.225 up above the substrate. 41 00:02:11.525 --> 00:02:16.385 We ran a three eight inch poly line, uh, deployed the kelp, 42 00:02:16.965 --> 00:02:20.425 and lo and behold, it grew like wildfire. 43 00:02:25.295 --> 00:02:27.505 Another advantage is just the ease of setup. 44 00:02:27.855 --> 00:02:29.905 It's very, very, very easy to set up. 45 00:02:29.945 --> 00:02:31.825 I mean, you could set up a hundred foot line in 46 00:02:32.415 --> 00:02:33.785 15 minutes, 20 minutes. 47 00:02:33.895 --> 00:02:35.065 It's just very, very simple. 48 00:02:35.485 --> 00:02:38.865 Um, you don't have to deal with the weather. 49 00:02:39.165 --> 00:02:41.025 Uh, I mean, you do have, you have to deal with the weather, 50 00:02:41.125 --> 00:02:42.905 but weather isn't as much of a problem 51 00:02:43.175 --> 00:02:44.945 because you don't necessarily have 52 00:02:44.945 --> 00:02:47.185 to work from a boat in these shallow water environments. 53 00:02:47.185 --> 00:02:49.785 You put a pair of waiters on and you jump in the water. 54 00:02:49.845 --> 00:02:52.545 So if it's, you know, blowing too hard for a boat, 55 00:02:52.605 --> 00:02:53.865 you can still go do your work. 56 00:02:54.005 --> 00:02:57.825 So a lot of advantages of these shallow water systems, 57 00:02:58.305 --> 00:03:00.725 I think it actually outperformed many, uh, 58 00:03:00.725 --> 00:03:02.205 traditional deep water farms. 59 00:03:02.545 --> 00:03:04.645 And it was just a, it was a phenomenal experience 60 00:03:04.665 --> 00:03:07.645 to see this marine organism that, you know, started out 61 00:03:07.705 --> 00:03:10.245 as I say, like mere millimeters with almost 62 00:03:10.785 --> 00:03:11.805 no capital investment. 63 00:03:17.425 --> 00:03:19.325 The final thing I'll say is that in a lot 64 00:03:19.325 --> 00:03:21.245 of these shallow water environments, that's where some 65 00:03:21.245 --> 00:03:23.005 of the biggest water quality issues are. 66 00:03:23.185 --> 00:03:25.165 So that's where you have some of your biggest nitrogen 67 00:03:25.255 --> 00:03:28.445 loads, um, runoff in these shallow bays. 68 00:03:28.465 --> 00:03:31.205 So being able to grow sugar kelp 69 00:03:31.205 --> 00:03:33.325 and other seaweeds in these shallow environments has a, 70 00:03:33.565 --> 00:03:34.845 a great environmental value. 71 00:03:35.665 --> 00:03:38.285 So, um, yeah, a lot of advantages 72 00:03:38.465 --> 00:03:40.805 and benefits of growing kelp in, in shallow water.
