Spool stands are a grid-like structure that provide support to your seed spools within the tank to prevent them from moving around or bumping into each other. Without a stand, spools might move due to aeration, high water flow, or by being bumped or jostled by human hands during routine chores. 

To create a spool stand you can either attach a series of rings directly to your culture tank, or you can cut a base that is matched in size to the bottom of your tank. Typically, spool stand bases are made from hard clear plastic, the same material as your tank lids. Using a base allows your spool stand to be removable for easy cleaning.

Different Types of Spool Stands

PVC Caps

Glue a PVC cap to your spool stand base that is the same size as your spool

PVC Couplings

Cut a PVC coupling in half and glue it to your base

PVC Pipes

Use pieces of PVC one size smaller than your spools, and glue them to the base. Your spool will slide over the smaller PVC.
