Kelp Processing in Action | Cordova, AK

This short video shows action clips from a pilot kelp processing operation run by kelp farmers and the Prince William Sound Economic Development District in Cordova, Alaska at a local seafood processing plant. Watch the full processing line in action: kelp arriving dockside in brailer bags, sorted and inspected by hand, then moved through size reduction – either a shredder or a screw press that separates the liquid and solid fractions. The kelp shown in this video is being stabilized by two methods: drum drying and salt preservation, producing shelf-stable product ready for market. The workers in the video are all farmers, part of a collaborative effort by the Cordova community to establish new channels of market access for stabilized kelp. Video by Jessica Kate Photography.
