At GreenWave, we keep track of each spool by marking its inner lip with a unique number. These numbers are also useful as an indicator of whether the spools are in the correct position. In the photo you can see that the numbers are all oriented the same way, so we know that each spool has been turned in this tank.

Daily Chores

Spin Spools a Quarter Turn
If your tanks are lit from the sides, parts of your spools will not be receiving direct light everyday. To help encourage even growth, hand spin all the spools in your tank a quarter turn each day, so the entire spool can get its even share of light. If you are using LEDs, you should also flip your spool to avoid any banding on them.

If your tanks are being lit from above, you will not have this daily chore. Many hatcheries with overhead lighting have reported no issue of uneven growth, but as a precaution, you can flip the entire spool once per week so the bottom moves to the top of the water column, where the strongest light levels are.
