Soak New Equipment

When introducing any new equipment to your tank culturing system, such as your PVC seed spools, seeding tubes, or tank stands, you should first soak the equipment to leach out any chemicals. It is advised to do this first in freshwater for 2-3 days, and then in saltwater for 2-3 days after that. This ensures nothing harmful will leach into the tanks during the season that could impact your kelp seed.

After any new equipment is leached, it will need to be sterilized. GreenWave sterilizes most of our equipment with a 1% bleach solution. Make sure to neutralize bleached equipment before adding it to your tanks. We’ll cover details of this sanitization process in the Hatchery Operations course.

GreenWave Tip

This is also a good opportunity to check for any leaks in your tubes or plumbing. Fill your equipment to the brim with water; note if the water level has lowered over time or if there are wet spots on the floor.
