Shelving

The next thing to think about is how to easily access your tanks. If possible, when choosing shelving, keep tanks at hip height to make it easy to take things in and out of them and save you from back pain. If your design plan calls for stacking tanks on top of each other to utilize the height of the room, be sure to plan for enough space between the tank on the bottom level and the start of the shelving for the next tier up. Not having enough vertical space to remove your spools and access the bottom tanks will quickly become frustrating.

When researching the right shelving for your space, keep in mind that salt water weighs about 8.6 lbs./gallon, so be sure to find an option that can hold the combined weight of the tanks, water, plumbing, pumps, chiller, etc. Salt water does not pair well with metal, so also look for something rustproof. Historically, GreenWave has purchased shelving from ULINE, but there can also be options at local hardware stores, or you can find used shelving online.

If you’re planning to create a two-tiered tank system, be sure to leave enough room to access your bottom tanks.
