Before spools leave your hatchery, consider giving them a spool score. We have created a simple equation based on the percent of spool growth coverage, blade color, growth consistency, and level of contaminants to grade each spool on a 0-10 scale. Our goal for scoring every spool that leaves the hatchery is to ensure that we provide high-quality seed to our farmers and track how different quality spools perform in the field. With that being said, we are still testing whether the factors of this scoring system are good indicators of how kelp will perform on the farm.
