When you receive your spools, it’s a good idea to verify the contents of the shipment against your hatchery invoice. Make sure you have the correct number of spools and that they are of the quality you were expecting. Ideally, you want the seed to be a dark brown color and the spool to be densely covered in blades. Don’t worry if there are a few bare patches, there may still be microscopic sporophytes you can’t see with the naked eye.
If the spools you receive from the hatchery are not of the quality you were expecting, advocate for yourself! Many hatcheries will issue a refund for sub-par seed. You might also call around to other hatcheries in your region to see if there are extra spools available.
