Successful sorus collection and spore release
Back to: Wrapping Up the Season
The hatchery season goes by very quickly, and in what feels like a blink of an eye, you’ll be transitioning from preseason prep to coordinating around outplanting. There are a number of things to think about during the final weeks of the season to ensure a successful transfer of spools from the hatchery to the field.

As mentioned in previous lessons, taking spool orders from farmers should be done early in the summer. Once you have a list of who you will be providing seed to, it’s helpful for both parties to stay in communication throughout the hatchery season.
It’s crucial for the farmer to understand how the spools are progressing and when they will be ready for pickup, so they can get permits and gear in place and be ready to receive the seed they ordered. You don’t want to get stuck housing a farmer’s spools because they didn’t have enough advanced warning. Especially towards the end of the season, over- rather than under-communicate. It may be helpful to provide the farmer with a Seed Agreement so that both parties are clear on the expectations for the season.
