Prepare Spools and Seeding Equipment

Now that your sorus tissue has been thoroughly cleaned and slightly desiccated overnight, it is time to rehydrate the tissue and encourage it to release its spores.

Seeding is a time-sensitive and all-consuming task. To reduce stress, make sure to prep all your spools and seeding equipment in advance.

Seeding your spools with sugar kelp spores is time-sensitive; the spores are only motile (propelling themselves around with flagella) for about 1-2 hours. Depending on the scale of your operations (i.e. how many spools you need to seed), this process can also be all-consuming. To set yourself up for success, it’s important to have your space and equipment prepped and ready the day before.

Similar to processing sorus tissue, for seeding, all tools, equipment, and surfaces should be wiped clean with 70% ethanol, and you should wear nitrile gloves. When using ethanol, be sure to let all of the ethanol dry completely before any equipment comes in contact with your seed or water. If you are using sorus tissue from more than one location, resterilize everything and change out your gloves before starting with the next material. You can refer to the Spool Seeding Protocol linked at the end of this course for step by step seeding directions.
