Make a Schedule

While some hatchery chores need to be performed daily, others are less frequent. Listed below are typical weekly chores.

Good spool growth is dependent on good husbandry practices.
Weekly Checklist
  • Water changes

  • Nutrient additions

  • Sterilizing and storing equipment

These three tasks are the main activities you want to keep track of and ensure you’re completing as scheduled. When you seed your spools, it helps to chart out on a calendar the next five to eight weeks and schedule these tasks. Usually, these tasks will occur back to back. You will typically conduct a water change and add nutrients the same day. In GreenWave’s container nursery system, the water flow is set for 100% refreshment for each tank each day. In this case, you do not need to do water changes and you need to add nutrients daily. Either later that same day or at another time, you’ll clean the dirty equipment. The timeline for cleaning is flexible, since the dirty tanks aren’t needed until the following water change. The day before you conduct a water change, you will need to prep by chilling filtered seawater. It’s possible to space these tasks farther apart, but the longer you wait to clean your tanks, the more you increase the risk of allowing contaminants in your tank to proliferate.

In addition to these three tasks, there could be other types of routine maintenance you check in on weekly. This could include cleaning filters, conducting maintenance on mechanical equipment, or filling up on distilled seawater.
