Keep Good Records

A key, often overlooked step to outplanting is keeping good records! As much as you think you’ll remember the specific details of the day you outplanted, they’ll soon all start to blur together. As your seed starts to grow, you may notice a difference in how your individual lines are performing. Reviewing your outplanting data can help you rule out whether something went awry during outplanting or the discrepancy is due to seed-related factors or localized conditions on your farm.

Do yourself a favor, and keep good notes on which spools you outplanted where on your farm and what the environmental factors were that day.

It’s helpful to record
  • The date

  • Air temperature

  • Water temperature

  • Weather conditions (wet or dry)

  • Any identifying information about the spool (blade length, hatchery origin, spool quality, seed string diameter, etc.)

  • The growline on your farm where the spool was outplanted

Keeping good records is key to optimizing growth on your farm.
