Install Mid-line Spreaders

The last component of gear installation on the 5-line array happens after outplanting. After all 5 of your growlines are successfully seeded, you’ll return to the pre-designated spots along your growlines every 100 feet to install your mid-line spreaders. As we mentioned in the Gear Prep course, we recommend pre-splicing either small nylon ties or Dyneema soft shackles to your 5-line array growlines at 100-foot intervals. As you’re outplanting, after the seed spool has passed over the soft shackle, connect a small cork attached to a stainless steel snap. When you’ve finished outplanting, return to the cork and install your mid-line spreaders by connecting each individual growline to a welded eye.

Mid-line spreaders and buoys can be installed after outplanting by connecting them with pre-spliced ties or soft shackles.
Industry Tip

When using a 5-line array there is concern that too much mid-line flotation can cause the system to flip in rough weather. To avoid this, you could attach a small cork to your mid-line spreaders directly after outplanting and wait until you start to see early growth on your lines or notice sag in the system before adding more substantial flotation, such as an A-1 polyform buoy.
