Kelp Stabilization in Rural Alaska
Past Event Details
Join us to learn about technology aimed at processing kelp in rural communities. Alaska Sea Grant, Macro Oceans, KALI, Alaska Ocean Farms, and GreenWave will be hosting a webinar to share the Joint Innovation Project and its implications on rural processing capacity.
In the Joint Innovation Project, we aimed to develop a scalable processing line that:
- Can process whole, fresh kelp without any pre-processing into a pumpable slurry such that it can be mixed with stabilization reagents
- Requires minimal space, labor, power, and freshwater
- Can be built for under $50k with off-the-shelf hardware and equipment
In this recap conversation we will dig into iterations and improvements of this system based on pilot trials and user feedback, and how versions of this system could be used to stabilize kelp in a variety of contexts.
