What you'll learn
In this introductory course, you’ll learn the basics of kelp cultivation.
We’ll start with what kelp is and how the hatchery process works. Then, we’ll take you on a visual tour of what kelp farms look like across the country. We’ll touch on emerging market opportunities for kelp in the U.S.: where it’s being sold and what it’s being used for. And finally, we’ll cover the first steps that you’ll want to consider if you’re thinking of setting up a farm of your own, like how to go about finding a site, factors that influence decisions around design and gear types, and the permits that will be required.
All of the topics in this course are broken down in much more detail in the courses to follow. But for those looking for a 30,000-foot view of the U.S. kelp farming industry and how it works, start here.
