Welcome to the Hub

Hello, future farmers!

Welcome to the GreenWave Ocean Farming Hub; we’re glad you’re here. The Hub is a resource for folks who are serious about starting and running a seaweed farm. It’s designed to guide you along your journey toward becoming an ocean farmer and support you when you get there. In the courses that follow, you’ll find technical guidance on how to select a site, design a farm, apply for a permit, and ultimately run and scale your farm.

Much of the advice and guidance we suggest comes from our own experience as ocean farmers.

GreenWave’s co-founder, Bren Smith, was one of the first commercial kelp farmers in the U.S. and has been running a 10-acre kelp and shellfish farm off the coast of Branford, Connecticut for over 20 years.

The industry is rapidly expanding, and ocean farms are popping up in coastal states across the U.S. and around the world. In service of our mission to train the next generation of ocean farmers, we’ve been in touch with as many of these farmers as possible, learning from their experiences and consolidating their lessons into the courses that follow.

The Hub is designed to be a place where new and experienced farmers can come together, learn, and share ideas in an ecosystem dedicated to their success.
