Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria is a type of bacteria that is able to photosynthesize. In the GreenWave hatchery, we have observed red cyanobacteria on our spools. Red cyanobacteria tend to be opportunistic in aquarium settings, given the high nutrient and light conditions. In its early stages, it will appear as a light pink or red spot and grow outward into large, deep red spots that cover and suffocate your kelp.

There is a general lack of understanding on how to eliminate red cyanobacteria from spools once it’s been identified. There has been speculation that air drying or iodine spot treatments can rid a spool of red cyanobacteria, but no concrete practices have been defined.  We have found that if one spool shows signs of it, the rest of the spools within that tank will soon follow. GreenWave’s best recommendation, therefore, is to isolate any red spools into an extra, empty tank when possible or toss the spool completely. Red cyanobacteria can be very devastating to a hatchery if quick action isn’t taken.
