Aeration

A little bit of air bubbling in your culture tanks is useful to prevent stagnant water and maintain pH levels. You’ll want to make sure any air added to your tanks is filtered to prevent the introduction of contaminants. That can be done through the air blower or pump being used, or through disk or in-line filters that are attached in the air line. In-line air filters can be purchased at companies such as Cole-Parmer. Be sure your air can be filtered to 0.2µm.

For smaller operations, air pumps for fish tanks can be purchased at pet stores and typically come with air stones. For bigger hatcheries, large blowers can be used. At GreenWave, we use a Sweetwater Regenerative Blower due to the large number of tanks that need to be aerated. These are more expensive and also require the purchase of air stones or diffusers like those seen here at Pentair.
