Day-of Considerations

The day of sorus collection, you’ll want to pack a few simple items for transporting your blades from the field back to your facility to ensure that they stay cool and damp. In addition to any dive or snorkel gear, we recommend you bring along the following equipment. 

Useful Equipment for Collection:

  1. Mesh collection bag

  2. Bucket or cooler

  3. Knife or scissors

  4. Ice Packs

  5. Burlap or paper towels

  6. Rags/towels

  7. Sharpie

  8. Ziplock bags

You can use the mesh collection bag as you’re swimming in the water and the knife or scissors to cut the sorus tissue free when you find it.

The burlap or towels will be used for keeping the blades damp during transport, and the ice packs can help keep it cool once it’s out of the water. Sharpies and Ziplocks are useful for labeling your sorus tissue with the collection location and species.
