Sorus Collection

In this course, we’ll walk you through the process of locating, identifying, and ultimately collecting reproductive sorus tissue from wild kelp beds. You’ll want to start this process early, looking for your ideal collection sites and making boat transportation arrangements in the summer. Many species of kelp have look-alikes, which can be easy to mistake in the field. We’ll guide you through some tips on how to identify the blades you’re looking for. Then, we’ll introduce some management best practices to ensure that you’re collecting responsibly (in a way that doesn’t negatively impact the wild population). Lastly, we’ll walk you through the process of transporting the sorus tissue you’ve collected back to the hatchery for processing.
